And thus began a story of friendship between the two that changed Sentaro’s life forever. However, her sweet bean paste, which is the main ingredient in dorayaki, was so delicious that Sentaro couldn’t help but keep her. Sentaro initially turned her away, hesitant to employ her due to her age and disfigured hands. Sweet Bean Paste began with Tokue approaching Sentaro for a job at Doraharu, a shop where Sentaro sold dorayaki. She begins to teach him her craft, but as their friendship flourishes, social pressures become impossible to escape and Tokue’s dark secret is revealed, with devastating consequences. ![]() Tokue makes the best sweet bean paste Sentaro has ever tasted. Into his life comes Tokue, an elderly woman with disfigured hands and a troubled past. With only the blossoming of the cherry trees to mark the passing of time, he spends his days in a tiny confectionery shop selling dorayaki, a type of pancake filled with sweet bean paste.
